The Los Angeles Dodgers placed Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday with a left hip injury, now they need someone to make the start in his place Saturday when it’s his turn in the rotation. Manager Don Mattingly will likely know who that will be after Friday night’s game with the San Diego Padres.
“Today’s game will determine what we will do” Mattingly said.
If the Dodgers don’t have to dig too deep into their bullpen tonight then Paul Maholm would make the start on Saturday. “There’s a pretty good chance” Mattingly said.
Maholm is 1-4 this year with a 5.18 ERA in 24 appearances and seven starts. His last start came on May 14th against the Miami Marlins, when he allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in the loss. The numbers don’t favor Maholm when it comes to Padres either, as he’s 1-6 with a 4.56 ERA in his career against them.
It’s not a sure thing that Maholm gets the nod for Saturday’s game, if not him, then the Dodgers would likely look to Triple –A right hander Red Patterson.
