Zack Greinke 2014 debut and Los Angeles Dodgers pre-game notes

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will resume their three-game series today at 3:40 p.m. PT on Tuesday. Zack Greinke will take the bump for the Dodgers for his 2014 season debut against Ian Kennedy.

Although Carlos Quentin is on the disabled list, the game is a clash of two games last season that had meaning. Greinke broke his collarbone in a fight with Quentin on April 11 at Petco Park. Kennedy started the game that saw a brawl on June 11 at Dodger Stadium between the Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks and received a 10-game suspension for his role.

Greinke owns a 3-0 record with a 1.74 ERA in five starts against the Padres in his career including 2-0 and 1.44 ERA as a member of the Dodgers. Kennedy is 5-4 with a 4.12 in 11 starts against the Dodgers in his career.

Notes:

-Manager Don Mattingly said it is likely Hyun-jin Ryu will make the start on Friday for the home opener against the San Francisco Giants.

-Clayton Kershaw will likely need a rehab start or two before he is ready to return from the disabled list. This news pushes his return back to at least mid to late April. “In my mind, it’s going to take some time,” Mattingly said. The Dodgers have placed Kershaw on a rehab that includes a submaximal throwing program for the next two to three weeks before being reevaluated again.

-Matt Kemp will not need a rehab in the mind of Mattingly which means he will make his season debut this weekend in the series with the Giants.

-GM Ned Colletti mentioned on a 710 ESPN radio appearance earlier Tuesday that Josh Beckett would likely need at least one rehab start before coming off the disabled list.

-Paul Maholm will likely start the Saturday game of the weekend series with the Giants while Greinke will start Sunday.
