SCOTTSDALE – For the second time this Spring, the Los Angeles Angels ended up in the loss column. The loss came to the benefit of the San Francisco Giants who defeated the Angels 3-2.
The focus of each Spring Training game tends to go on the starting pitchers. Today’s starters were Jered Weaver and Matt Cain who both performed well. Matt Cain finished his afternoon at the three inning mark, allowing just one hit, while striking out a pair. His command was flawless as per the norm. Jered Weaver also had himself a start worth applauding. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out a pair and walking a pair.
Pablo Sandoval brought two runs home for the Giants on singles in the early parts of the game. The first came with the help of an error to begin the game. A lazy fly ball fell over the head of Angels outfielder Brennan Boesch when he lost it in the sun. The second was very similar when a small ball third inning landed Sandoval at the plate with runners in scoring position and he capitalized.
The Giants third run came on a powerful double down the left field line from Mike Morse, scoring Hunter Pence from first.
The Angels runs came in the seventh inning at the expense of Jason Berken. Brennan Boesch brought in a run with a perfectly hit ball to the gap in left center that ended with Boesch diving in to third with a triple. He was brought home on the next at bat from Carlos Pena on a sacrifice groundout.
