ANAHEIM – There aren’t many things sweeter than winning on the very last play, shot, hit, or second of any game in any sport. Tonight, the Angels fans got to have their fun as Josh Hamilton delivered a walkoff home run in the tenth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim a 6-5 win over the Houston Astros.
Josh Hamilton finished the night 2-for-5, but he had the most important hit of the night as the baseball left the yard into the right field stands for his second walkoff home run of the season.
Ernesto Frieri picked up his first win of the season, and proved that he is still valuable to the bullpen striking out four in his two innings of work in the ninth and tenth.
Mark Trumbo had himself a groovy night (60’s night theme at Angel Stadium) going 2-for-5 with a monster solo home run, and a triple. No, that’s not a typo, Mark Trumbo actually had a triple tonight, on a routinely played ball down the line. It was Trumbo’s first triple since June 28th, 2012, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Erick Aybar kept doing what he’s best at, and hit the ball to all fields tonight, going 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI doubles.
Mike Trout singled in the third inning, which made it 39 consecutive games of reaching base. He also reached base on balls twice over the night.
The Astros leadoff and second in order men had themselves quality nights at the plate as well. Robbie Grossman finished the night 3-for-5. Grossman has hit safely in 16 of 19 games since he was recalled on July 27th. Following him in the order was Brett Wallace who also went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, two coming on a home run in the fifth.
Final from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California:
Astros, 5 Angels, 6
W – Ernesto Frieri (1-4, 4.41)
L – Josh Field (1-3, 6.84)
