Prior to tonight’s game against the Oakland Athletics, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced that infielder Brendan Harris has been designated for assignment in favor of Tommy Field, who was called up earlier in the day.
In 117 PA’s for the Angels in 2013, Harris posted a line of .206/.252/.355 but had only made it into three games thus far in July. It seems as if DFA’ing him might allow Harris the opportunity to wind up on a new team that might offer him more playing time, as he hasn’t played in a lot of games for Mike Scioscia lately.
Field, 26, had been called up earlier in the season but only appeared in three games (no offical at-bats). In 65 games with Triple-A Salt Lake, Field hit .297 witih 16 doubles, nine home runs, two triples and 38 RBIs.
The Angels now have ten days to either trade Harris, outright him to the minors or grant him a release.
